“Cold Heaven Viogniers are enticingly spicy, with crushed minerals and roasted peaches. These Viogniers are the best produced in California!”

Rajat Parr, Wine Director

Cold Heaven has a keen focus on cool climate Viognier. My tasting experiences from traveling yearly to the Condrieu region of France, copious tasting of California Viogniers, and experimentation with different vineyards and microclimates has led to my belief that Viognier which maintains a natural acidity is the best expression of the grape.

Cold Heaven's definitive style is fresh, bright, and delicious, alone or with food.  In working with three different vineyards, each in its own microclimate within Santa Barbara County, I have learned which clone works best in each area.

Since 1996, my pursuit of producing the best wines from unparalleled vineyard sources has deepened my passion for Viognier. The need to produce something extraordinary propels me to make these wines and give people the opportunity to taste Viognier the way it should be: complex; lively; and fresh.

My technique allows the fruit from each vineyard to speak clearly within the structure of the wine. The grapes are harvested between 23-24 brix, a balanced ripeness which avoids high alcohol. The grapes are gently pressed and left to settle for 24 to 48 hours to separate out solids. The juice is put into neutral, older French oak barrels for primary fermentation until malolactic fermentation is complete.  Each wine matures at its own rate. Wines are fined, cold stabilized, and left unfiltered for bottling. All the wines, while being fruit driven, are fermented dry.

Cold Heaven wines develop nicely in bottle, some drinking fresh up to 5 years, atypical of most California Viogniers.

"Deux C", is an international blend made up of Sanford & Benedict vineyard fruit from Santa Barbara County, combined in equal parts with legendary winemaker Yves Cuilleron's French grapes from the Northern Rhône appellation of Condrieu.

Finally, for those rare times when a Viognier just won't do, I offer a Syrah "Second Sin," from the Clendenen family's own Le Bon Climat Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley.

Deux C Viognier

Condrieu, France (50%) and Santa Barbara County (50%)

There is so much misunderstanding about the true nature of Viognier and its historic winegrowing area of Condrieu in France's Rhone Valley. Cold Heaven's Morgan Clendenen, and Yves Cuilleron, owner and winemaker of Domaine Yves Cuilleron, have created a wine together to demonstrate the uniqueness, and deliciousness, of this noble, exotic grape. This wine also reflects and reveals its origins in Condrieu. Deux C is the culmination of friendship, commitment to Viognier, passion for experimentation, and a dedication to unify something great and rare.

Viognier - Le Bon Climat Vineyard
Santa Barbara County

This wine is a treat. Delicate aromas of peach, guava and honey-suckle with hints of straw and springtime orchard flowers. In the mouth, it is soft (butter, Crème Frche) and racy (zesty acidity lively on the palate, and crisp like cold green grapes) at the same time. Even worldly pundits rave that it is “one of the most luscious, intense, complex wines one could ever hope to taste” (Parker) and “its scent and flavor have no parallel.” (Johnson).

Viognier - Sanford and Benedict Vineyard
Santa Barbara County

In the spring of 1996, Morgan discovered that a (then) rare Rhône variety was available from the “fabled” Sanford and Benedict Vineyard. This wine is packed with initial lovely aromas of apricots, sweet butter, and pears and it moves to a kind of wet brook scent – much like classic Condrieu. It is richer and more full-bodied than the Le Bon Climat with an amazing mineral component in the mouth. The finish is sweet and lingering.

Viognier - Vogelzang Vineyard
Santa Ynez Valley

Lush tropical fruits and exotic white flowers overlay an invigorating acidity that keeps the wine fresh and lively. Morgan is very careful with her Viognier harvesting at just that paradoxical moment when both a sylph-like sleekness and a siren's seductiveness share center stage. A lovely wine.

Viognier - Santa Rita Hills
Sta Rita Hills

From a highly regarded AVA -- lush tropical fruits and exotic white flowers overlay an invigorating acidity that keeps the wine fresh and lively.

Pinot Noir - Le Bon Climat Vineyard
Santa Barbara County

This is the rarest wine of Morgan's production. Life can’t go on without red wine. But this isn’t just any old red, this is a GREAT wine. Morgan's best Pinot to date and from her own vineyard to boot. Lots of cherry, dried rose petals, musk, hints of black tea and sandalwood. A luscious wine. To drink it is to love it. 624 cases produced. Currently SOLD OUT.

Syrah - "Second Sin"
Santa Barbara County

This is Cold Heaven’s Rhone red and the future of Syrah in California. It has been said when you don’t follow fashion and remain true to the subject, then you create something timeless. I believe this wine embodies these words. This is a syrah with elegance, finesse, and a bit of youth to create something with longevity.
